How does a young adult become a tradesperson, and what does their career path look like?

Trade Up exists to provide young adults with information about how to develop a career in the construction trades. By exploring this website, using its resources, and communicating with its counselors, Trade Up can help a young person to identify and pursue a professional career path in the trades.

Selecting a career path is the first decision a young adult must make to build a career in the trades. The Career Explorer section of this website provides a wealth of information through which students can learn more about the different trade professions and the kind of projects they complete.

Once a young person has discovered a professional path, enlist in an apprenticeship program for that trade to begin your skills training. You can start the process of enlistment simply by clicking on the "TradeUp Now" button at the top right of any page in this website. A Trade Up counselor will answer any questions you may have about the enlistment process and also connect you with a representative from the profession you are interested in.

After you begin your professional training and education, you are an apprentice, and you will study and work closely with mentors for 4 or 5 years to develop a skill set that assures you are competent and confident working on any project in your field.

Having completed your training, you now become a Journeyman. You have studied and worked long enough now that you are ready to begin assuming more responsibility in projects you work on. Your good work ethic and your sharpened skills now allow you to be more selective about the projects you take.

As a Journeyman, you will continue to develop your skills through annual coursework, but you will have opportunities to learn more about leadership, project management, and business management as well, which can all contribute to your overall value as an employee in the workplace.

Meanwhile, throughout your entire involvement in your profession- as an apprentice and a Journeyman- you will have been contributing to a pension which will provide you with income when you retire.

A strong career is built day-by-day, step-by-step, as you apply yourself to your chosen profession. By building your career in the construction trades, you will find yourself surrounded by rich opportunities and rewards as you practice your profession.
