How do educators work with Trade Up to inform students about career opportunities in the trades?
As an educator, we want to make it easy for you to work with us informing young people about construction opportunities in New Mexico. We have three simple suggestions for you in helping us to counsel students about careers.
Be informed. Contact Trade Up through this website to receive our Educator's Packet, which contains a wealth of information for teachers and counselors about the Trade Up program, about occupation options in the trades, about talking with students about trade career opportunities, and about helping trade-bound students with educational choices and additional coursework direction. Aside from the Educator's Packet, the TradeUp New Mexico website also contains additional resources and opportunities for educators to attend events that pertain to career counseling related to the trades.
Be objective. While many students aspire to attend college and pursue a classic education route before finding their career, many other students do not take this route, and can benefit from education about other professional development opportunities. With broad opportunities, a free education, and earn-while-you-learn incentives, directing students to consider a career in a trade profession is a positive way to help them find their futures while they also find themselves. While some associate construction work as blue collar, the skills and knowledge needed by craftsmen in today's workforce make their participation on projects highly valued and rewarded. An occupation in the trades provides an individual with a craft and a career, not merely a job and paycheck.
Be supportive. Trade professionals build the places we live in and work in all across New Mexico. These men and women build the structures that allow others to build the businesses and services that drive our state economically and socially. Understand that those who choose to enter the trades are entering time–valued professions that impact our cities and communities. For those students with an interest in the trades, your support may make the difference in helping them to discover a career that they love.
You are free to contact our staff at Trade Up at any time to receive assistance and resources that can help you as you counsel your students about careers.
